Ward Norwood Miller (1972-2007)

Ward Miller died on 2 January 2007 in Santa Cruz, CA. He was 34 years old.

Ward was a native of Washington State, where he attended high school in the Spokane area. He was an accomplished wrestler and avid outdoorsman. After graduating high school in 1990, Ward entered the Naval Academy as a member of the Class of 1994. At Annapolis, Ward majored in English and served as 33rd Company Commander in Fall 1993.

After graduation, Ward served as a Surface Warfare Officer with several sea duty tours duty onboard USS CALIFORNIA (CGN 36), USS ARCTIC (AOE 8), and USS CALLAGHAN (DDG 994). He also served on the public affairs staff for the Northwest Navy Region and as a reservist during a major NATO exercise in Poland.

Following his military service, Ward worked for the major pharmaceutical firm Pfizer. While with Pfizer, Ward met his wife Julie, and they were married in San Jose, CA in December 2004. Most recently Ward founded and owned a real estate brokerage, SilverMill, Inc. in Soquel, CA.

Ward is survived by his wife of two years Julie, his nine-year old daughter Ariel, his infant son Max, his sister Crystal Miller, and his parents Loren and Rachel Miller.

A gathering of friends and family was held, in lieu of services, at the home of his in-laws Jody and Hal Stanger in Santa Cruz on Saturday, 6 January 2007. Following the gathering, five of his ’94 classmates committed some of his ashes to the Pacific Ocean to commemorate his naval service to our country.
